Mother of pearl buying guide

Handmade mother of pearl and shell inlay furniture

Every piece in this collection is covered in natural shell, cut into small tiles and laid one by one by hand. Under the light, the mother of pearl shifts from cream to silver to soft pink, which is why no two tables or sideboards ever look quite the same. Choose from round and oval mother of pearl coffee tables, shell inlay side tables and stools that double as bedside tables, and statement mother of pearl sideboards and buffets in black, cream, charcoal and emerald.

Mother of pearl coffee tables

Our round drum coffee tables run from 76cm to 92cm across, including the textured grey Mont Blanc, the blue and gold Bluesy and the striped Coastal Elegance in black. For longer sofas, choose an oval like the floral Apia in ink and cream, the 120cm Coastal Boho in white or the 116cm Waterfall coffee table on a brushed brass base.

Shell inlay side tables and bedside tables

Compact enough for a bedside, a reading chair or a hallway corner. The Boho Floral side table has a drawer and a cupboard, the black vine square side table has an open shelf, and the Swirl 2-drawer chest works as a generous nightstand.

Shell stools and accent tables

Drum stools around 35cm across can be a side table, a plant stand, an extra seat at a vanity or a bedside table in a guest room. Try the pearly Alpine Cream stool, the charcoal and gold seashell stool, the emerald seashell stool or the beachy natural sea shell side table.

Mother of pearl sideboards and buffets

From the compact 100cm Monaco and the 120cm Copenhagen on its black metal stand, up to the 142cm Swirl 4-door sideboard. The black vine sideboard and its light hue twin add two drawers above four cupboard doors for dining room storage.

Console tables

For an entryway or behind a sofa, the slim Waterfall console table is 116cm long and just 33cm deep, in sage green and cream stripes on a brushed brass base.

Mother of pearl, capiz or seashell: what's the difference?

  • Mother of pearlThe smooth, iridescent inner layer of a shell, also called nacre. It gives our pieces their shimmer, with natural tones of cream, silver, grey and blush.
  • Capiz shellA thin, slightly translucent shell from the windowpane oyster. Most of our mother of pearl pieces combine capiz and mother of pearl for a layered, glowing finish.
  • Seashell inlayDiscs and pieces of other natural shells, often set into a coloured background like our emerald, turquoise and charcoal gold designs.

Mother of pearl furniture FAQs

Is it real mother of pearl?

Yes. Each piece is covered in natural mother of pearl, capiz or seashell, cut and laid by hand over a sturdy MDF core and sealed with a clear protective lacquer.

Will my piece look exactly like the photo?

Not exactly. Because the shells are natural and every tile is laid by hand, the pattern and colour vary from piece to piece. That is what makes each one unique.

How do I clean mother of pearl furniture?

Dust with a dry, lint-free cloth. Avoid cleaning sprays, chemicals and damp cloths, as they can damage the lacquer and the shell.

Will the colour change over time?

Yes, gently. The protective lacquer slowly warms to a slight yellow tinge with light, heat and age. This is natural and not a fault. Keeping the piece out of direct sunlight and away from heaters slows it down.

Can I use it outdoors?

No. Mother of pearl and shell inlay furniture is for indoor use only. Sun, rain and humidity will damage the finish.

Where is it made?

Most of the collection is handmade by artisans in Vietnam, using traditional shell inlay techniques.

Does it need assembly?

Most pieces arrive fully assembled and ready to use. Check the product page for details.
