Door mat buying guide

Door mats for every Australian entrance

A good door mat is the hardest-working thing at your front door. It scrapes mud, sand and grass off shoes before they reach your floors, soaks up moisture on wet days and sets the tone for everyone who walks in. Our range covers natural coir door mats, heavy duty rubber mats, extra wide mats for double and sliding doors, and fun printed welcome mats in Aussie bird, coastal, farmhouse, pet and caravan designs.

Choose your mat type

Natural coir door mats

Coir is made from coconut husk fibre, a tough natural material with stiff bristles that are brilliant at brushing dirt off footwear. Our printed coir mats are 1.5cm thick with a non-slip PVC or latex backing, so they stay put and are slim enough for most front doors. Start with a classic natural coir welcome mat or a smart double black border coir mat.

Premium hand-woven coir mats

For a deeper, more luxurious mat, our premium coir mats are hand woven on traditional looms without electricity and sourced from a fair trade supplier. At 4cm thick they have a plush, heavy feel and serious scraping power, with bold designs like the black fern and black pineapple mats.

Heavy duty rubber and coir-rubber mats

Rubber door mats are made for high-traffic and exposed entrances. They resist mould, mildew, stains and UV, and many combine a recycled rubber base with coir inserts for extra scraping, like our heavy duty coir rubber door mat at just 1cm thick. For a statement entrance, try the heavy duty half moon door mat.

Large and extra wide door mats

Double doors, French doors and sliding doors need a mat that covers the full opening. Choose an extra wide coir door mat (39 x 119cm), a 110cm welcome mat, a 45 x 120cm ribbed rubber mat, a large 60 x 120cm rubber mat or a generous 90 x 150cm marine carpet mat.

Marine carpet and anti-fatigue mats

Marine carpet mats are washable, weatherproof and absorb dirt and water well, which makes them ideal for garages, laundries, back doors and covered entries. If you stand for long periods in a workshop, garage or kitchen, our rubber anti-fatigue floor mat cushions your feet and drains spills through its open grid.

Door mat size guide

As a rule of thumb, choose a mat that covers at least 80% of the width of your door, so every step lands on it. Standard Australian front doors are around 82cm wide.

45 x 75cm
50 x 80cm
Standard single front and back doors, and the size most of our designs come in.
40 x 75cmCaravan, RV and narrow doorways.
110 to 120cm wideDouble doors, French doors and wider entries.
60 x 120cm to 90 x 150cmLarge entrances, sliding doors, garages and commercial doorways, including our 76 x 120cm half moon.

Check the gap under your door. If the door opens over the mat, measure from the bottom of the door to the floor and choose a mat thinner than that gap: our printed coir mats are 1.5cm, rubber and marine carpet mats about 1cm, and premium hand-woven coir mats 4cm.

Door mat FAQs

What is the best material for an outdoor door mat?

Coir is the classic choice for scraping dirt off shoes and suits most covered front doors and verandahs. For exposed entrances that cop rain and sun, a heavy duty rubber or coir-rubber mat is the most weather resistant, as it resists mould, mildew and UV.

What size door mat do I need?

For a standard single door, a 45 x 75cm or 50 x 80cm mat is ideal. For double, French or sliding doors, choose an extra wide mat of 110 to 120cm or a large 90 x 150cm mat. See our size guide above for more detail.

Will the door mat fit under my door?

Our slimline, low profile mats are designed for doors with low clearance. Printed coir mats are 1.5cm thick and rubber and marine carpet mats are around 1cm. Premium hand-woven coir mats are 4cm thick, so they suit doors that open away from the mat or have plenty of clearance.

How do I clean a coir door mat?

Shake it out or tap it against a wall regularly, then vacuum or sweep with a stiff brush. Spot clean marks with a little mild soapy water and let the mat dry completely in the sun before putting it back. Avoid soaking coir or leaving it sitting in water.

Do coir door mats shed?

It is normal for a new coir mat to shed some loose fibres for the first few weeks. A regular shake and vacuum clears them, and shedding settles down with use.

Can I use a coir mat indoors?

Yes. Coir mats with a non-slip latex or PVC backing work well just inside the door as an entrance mat. For indoor wet areas, garages and laundries, marine carpet and rubber mats are easier to keep clean.

Are your door mats weatherproof?

Rubber, coir-rubber and marine carpet mats are made for outdoor use and stand up to the weather. Coir lasts longest under a porch or verandah, where it is protected from constant rain and can dry out between wet days.

How fast is delivery?

Door mats ship directly from our supplier and are dispatched within 2 to 4 business days.
